The Indian squat. What is it and why do we do it?

Today I was cleaning my rats' cage and I was hosing it down when I found myself squatting... like an Indian. What is an Indian squat? Well, its a way of sitting that Indians do and can be seen in the fallowing pictures:

Now, I'm not positive as to why Indian's do it, but I can sure as hell guess. First things first. Indians are so bloody lazy. That's why they're always late to EVERYTHING! They're just wasting time... If that's the case, then my guess is that Indians stand around a lot and when they're out on the town and need some place to sit so they take the most comfortable position without touching the dirty ground- the Indian squat. As to it's development, I'd say that because Indians (particularly those in India) tend to work using the ground as their surface most of the time, this way of sitting comes in handy.
